Create Your Own Sanctuary

Do you have a place that you know is specifically for meeting with God? Not a place that can't be touched by anyone else, but a place where you go to read Scripture, pray and just be quiet. Anyone who has been to our house very much knows that it is a place of activity, with color everywhere. I chose colors for our home to convey that message - happy, fun, full of life. The problem is that I was beginning to feel a little too busy and needed a place of quiet rest. Over the past eight months, I have slowly changed my bedroom to be that place. The colors and the clutter are almost completely gone. Everything is calming colors of white, off white or cream, with a couple of very light blue pillows. I am making a special point of moving out all stacks of unread books that seem to be crying out to me to read (my own unnecessary guilty feelings.) The mounds of business papers that have a home in a cabinet in my room are gradually learning to find their own home (thanks Ray.) And the pile of Goodwill clothes in the corner should be gone by the end of today. Parents' bedrooms can be a gathering place for kids and I am thankful for that, but I have a new resolution that Lydia does no more gymnastics on the bedposts. (Yes, the bed frame is now broken.) Hopefully, when I wake up tomorrow I won't be staring at another undone stack of something that I should have done. If I stay on top of that today, I can meet with God in my own little sanctuary.
