A Dead Chicken? Really

The past few weeks our homeschool has been sabotaged by one thing after another and I can honestly say, we have gotten nothing done. The weeks of things like sickness, visits to grandparents, appointments piled on top of each other, and several out of town games make homeschooling virtually impossible. Add to that warm weather, an exhausted mom, and spring fever and you have no real text book learning. Let's face it, homeschool is about learning life skills, but you also have to throw in the textbooks too.
Okay! This morning my goal was to be the "homeschool machine mom". You know the type... diligent to have a meaningful family devotion, start on time, finish each subject, smile at all the jokes and eat well balanced meals together. Here's how our day went:
  • I woke up at 6:00 instead of 5:30, so I got home from the gym late.
  • Since I need to go to the grocery store our breakfast was slap hazard.
  • Mary and Lydia woke up at 6:00 too so they were having trouble keeping their eyes open during our "meaningful" devotions.
  • Hannah had a small panic that she wouldn't get to vote in the special election on May 11th because her voter registration was confusing. (You must be registered at least 30 days in advance and this is the 29th day. It turned out that she was registered.)
  • It had been so long for us to do math with anyone that I spent most of the time reviewing.
  • Lydia's to do list was in the wrong order so that threw her in a tail spin.
  • Lunch (even worse than breakfast) consisted of 3 left over pancakes, 1 boiled egg, 2 beef ribs, 1 serving of cooked broccoli, carrots and cauliflower, canned spaghetti, lettuce and tomato.
  • We have to skip Spanish for me to get ready to go to the chiropractor (and type out this inspiring blog update).

Last but not least, Mary came in from gathering eggs and announced, "We have a dead chicken!" Now if a dead chicken isn't an attack on homeschooling I don't know what is! Should I go bury it or should I wait for Ray to come take care of it? And what do I do about the eggs she couldn't bear to get because the chicken looked soooo sad.....

Is it a sin for me to be encouraged to learn that other women have days... weeks... months like this, too?

No sin at all! I was just trying to encourage my friends. Now my day is complete. (After I get groceries, cook supper, go to a choir concert and pick up a dress at the outlet mall.) Can you tell I am still in a rush?

It may be because the girls and I don't eat meat, but our breakfasts and lunches are not particularly normal. Mary Margaret had green peas for breakfast yesterday. She begged for them. Her favorite lunch is an apple with peanut butter and a whole-grain pumpkin muffin. Yesterday they had hummus and strawberries for lunch.
