Mary is the reader of our family. She hasn't read everything there is to read, but she loves reading and can remember what she's read. When she turned ten at the beginning of the month we decided to have a birthday party with a literary theme. We played games that was associated with stories in her books and had girls running all over the house looking for poor abandoned babies or searching for lost wills. The menu included raspberry cordial, turkish delight and Nancy Drew's favorite - chicken and rice casserole.
When we were planning the party I asked Mary about any birthday parties in her books, like how the characters received gifts. She immediately had a great idea to do what the "Little Women" did and take food to the poor. So on the day of her party we had all of the girls bundle up and take a casserole, cupcakes, fruit and such to a neighbor. It had been snowing so it really looked like the scene from the Little Women movie with all of the girls traipsing through the snow carrying food to a neighbor. (Each girl had something in her hand to give to the man who came to the door.) He was overwhelmed and grateful when he returned our dish filled with bon bons for Mary. That is just like Mary. She is such a great gift giver! Her whole Christmas season was all about the gifts she was making for others. I really appreciate that about her. And I was thankful that she received her friends gifts with joy too. Now, if I could just get her thank you notes mailed out. (She's had them written for way too long.)
