Organization

Years ago I read a book by a lady who talked about the order in her home. She made the comment that she is so organized that she would never mind if anyone came into her home at any time and opened any drawer. She has a system for everything and is very diligent to keep it that way. Should I mention that though she is very active in her husband's ministry, she does not have small children in her home anymore?
I like to think I'm organized and enjoy reading on the subject. I'll rearrange things if I think I can make better use of the space. But there are definitely places in my home that I don't want you to see. Take the garage, I still haven't put away all of the Christmas decorations even though there is plenty of space for them in the attic. My closet is another disaster that I'll plan to keep hidden.
There are a few ideas that I try to keep in mind as I go through my day and cleaning, especially in the kitchen. If I use something a lot, it needs to be close at hand. The grits jar is easily accessible because we eat grits every morning at breakfast. The baking supplies are in the same section so that when it's time to do baking, everything can be gathered quickly. The organizational system I have for my plastics is not so good - open the door and throw it in, then shut the door fast. That cabinet was a little better when I didn't have a three year old helping unload the dishwasher, which is another subject altogether.
One problem with my system is that as I move the glasses to make sure they are where they are easiest to use, Ray has to search for them all the time. He still opens the cabinet door where the glasses where first put when we moved in to the house (11 years ago.) That particular cabinet has all of the coffee supplies in it. Coffee, coffee grinder, and mugs go on the bottom shelf and more mugs up a shelf with the pretty cups on the top shelf. When you open my cabinets it isn't a pretty sight with the plates set up against the back, but what I need is where it should be. Though I have 16 bowls, I don't have them all in the same place because we don't use 16 bowls a day. I don't mind separating sets of bowls, spices, etc. if I don't use every size often. I have a game trunk in the den that has the games most often played on top. The rest of the games are in the basement. The school closet in the den stays pretty organized because we use it every day but the school closet in the basement looks like a tornado hit it.
God is the God of Order as He demonstrated at Creation. We do have the responsibility to live our lives orderly before Him and man. I am a work in progress knowing that I have a ways to go, but also that I'm no longer horrified if you show up to my house unexpectedly. I'd love for you to drop by and even peek in the garage. I was so convicted about some of the disorder that I put away the Christmas decorations. You still can't look in my closet though.

Lori, That was so funny! I know what you mean about giving up some order in order to teach little ones to work! I moved all of the plastic cups, bowls and plates to the bottom shelf about a year ago so that all the girls could help unload their portion of the dishwasher. Sometimes I open that cabinet and things fall out. So then we have another lesson on keeping it organized! :) For the most part our place is pretty small so things have to stay fairly organized, but I must admit that my desk is a mess! And dust is rampant! So I agree no looking in closets (unless laundry day was yesterday) and don't look up at my fan either! :) Have a blessed day! Eva

Lori,

Organization is so important in running a home smoothly but like anything else it can get out of hand. There must be balance which me letting things go. In my younger days when the children were little I place too much importance on organization and now that I am older I have lightened up a bit. Funny thing though.... My oldest child is very organized. Shirts in closet according to color all facing the same way. He wants to organize the garage before working on the car with his dad! Organization is not even in my sweet hubby's vocabulary. Love them all.
