On Depression

Lately I've been approached with the subject of Biblical counseling and have been reading more than usual on the subject. In my reading I have learned a lot about depression and its causes and effects. I really gleaned a lot from a book by Wayne Mack called "Out of the Blues." In this book he explains the three things that can cause depression and gives biblical examples of each. It is amazing to me to see the many ways we use the word depression to describe feelings such as loneliness, sadness, discouragement, etc. He also gives a great explanation of how sin can affect our minds in a way that would cause outward physical effects. For those who are experiencing feelings that are less than joyful, I would recommend you looking at this book for a glimpse into how our thoughts can affect our whole lives.

Are the three things that can cause depression according to Wayne Mack, physical illnesses, drugs both legal and illegal, and sin?

The three reasons that Mack lists are 1.)refusing to deal with sin and guilt, 2.)mishandling a difficult event, 3.)having unbiblical standards or values. Another book that was really helpful in explaining the physical causes of depression is "Blame It on the Brain" by Ed Welch.
