We aren't big nature lovers at all (5 girls!) but Mary has learned to identify a lot of birds. She used to sit on the counter and whisper continously until we were all standing with her trying to name every bird that visited our feeder. Since we added on to our house and (acquired 5 cats) we haven't noticed a lot of birds around. I don't know if the cats were extra quiet or the birds were extra brave but this weekend the birds showed back up. While we were having church it was all I could do to keep Mary on her seat as every bird that she could name passed the window, but when a cardinal landed on the feeder she almost stood straight up.
On Monday Mr. Doug came to cut down our favorite weeping willow tree that had died. It was also the tree the birds hung out in. He graciously brought us another tree to plant in its place. This morning while we did school in front of the window, guess who showed up. At first it was a few sparrows, but by mid morning the cardinal was back. Mary thinks the birds like the new tree better because the cats haven't learned to climb it. I might agree with her.
What a joy to be reminded of God's hand in creation.
