We are so easily entangled in this world that we forget our reason for living, which is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. As moms we have a busy lifestyle even if we never leave our own home. There are a lot of needs that can't be put on hold, a lot of requests that must be addressed, and a lot of "important" activities to complete. I am one of those people that can do several things at one time, though they may not all be done great, and I stay moving a lot. But there is one thing that must have my undivided attention and it's my relationship with Christ. As I go through my day it is very important that I pause to think about why I am so busy and why I do the things I do.
It has been my habit to wake up before everyone to have my quiet time. Being bleary eyed and stumbling to my chair isn't the best way for a quiet time so I have to prepare ahead of time for sleep and quiet. For me going to bed on time is always the key ingredient for a meaningful time with God. Having a routine has been helpful too. I like to sit in the same spot, read from the same Bible, cover in the same blanket, etc. My routine is also helpful for the children as they know that when they come in early that I am having my quiet time and they stay quiet and still. My sweet husband intercepts the little ones and keeps them quiet if they get up too early. A reading plan is also good to keep your time with God focussed. In our drive through society, it's tempting to grap a few verses here and there and say we're done. Though all of Scripture is profitable we should read with a purpose. Right now I'm reading through the Bible in a year. As I speak I am only two months behind, but the plan keeps me moving forward.
There have been seasons in my life when my quiet time was done with the Barney tune going on in the background or with a little one in my lap, but being creative with time has enabled me to get to spend time with God. Ray recently wrote an article that I found very helpful regarding meditation, that can be found at www.nitw.blogspot.com
