When you heard the words "Do you promise to love and obey..." on your wedding day, did you take time to really understand what that phrase meant? I've often thought that I was completely obedient to my husband. But there are many occasions that I fail miserably. As Christian women, we hear the words obedience and submission. Do we truly know what that means? My husband doesn't lay out a list of rules and regulations for me and has never really been authoritative, but he does have special requests. Now when I read Ephesians 5:22 I can get puffed up and say with confidence, "Of course I am subject to Ray. I always do what he says." If I am going to be honest with you I would have to say that sometimes I am not obedient to Ray. Recently, Ray gave me a list of letters to address and mail and asked me to take care of that quickly. Two days later he asked about them. Of course, I hadn't finished the work and had plenty of excuses. The only real excuse was that I had been disobedient and did not honor my husband. Then when I finally got around to doing the work, I didn't do it right and had to start over. (The whole thing could have taken me fifteen minutes if it had been done right the first time. But that's another blog.) All that to say, there are many little things that we can take care of for our husbands and show them the honor God requires.
