On Sunday mornings these days, Ray is preaching at Jewell Baptist Church for a while. This past week, I went along with him and we had the three hour drive down and three hour drive home to visit and eat at some great restaurants. We get some good food, but the character is what makes these places so memorable.
We really like to eat out at local restaurants that are not a part of a chain. For breakfast, we went to the Mayflower Restaurant in downtown Athens, GA located right across from the arches since 1948. Our waitress has worked there on and off since 1963 and had all of the character of any television stereo typed waitress. She cheerfully served up the perfect fried eggs and grits, that were loaded with salt and butter. The Mayflower is one of the true Southern restaurants that assumes that anyone who eats breakfast there wants their creamy grits running all over the plate - which we did.
After church, a couple took us to another local diner that serves up its fare buffet style. Miss Jane's, in downtown Warrenton, GA, has a table set up in the front of the line that is covered with every type of pie and cake that the owner's mom bakes for the restaurant. I had a huge serving of country fried steak that was pulled out of a giant tub of gravy, creamed corn, macaroni and cheese and beets. Yes, I know, too many carbs, but it was very yummy.

Jerry and I used to eat breakfast at the Mayflower when he had a law office downtown and I was in grad school on north campus. Mmmm Biscuits and Grits!
You probably knew our waitress. I think I want to redecorate my basement in that 50's diner style. I'm sure it hasn't changed since ya'll were there.
