Did you ever get that sinking feeling when the phone rings in the middle of the night, and then you see it's your child calling, but when you answer a stranger says, "Umm, Mrs. Rhodes we have your daughter at the hospital." At that point all you can do is pray and stay calm. No need to panic! Why would you panic? Just because your daughter fell on the ice while playing broom hockey. At least that's what they were going to do the last time I talked to her. Who plays broom hockey? And on the ice? For the past two hours I have been talking to my new friend, aka Rebecca, every ten or fifteen minutes to determine - no, I should not come yet, she has a concussion but at least there isn't bleeding or swelling, she is beginning to remember things and seems very groggy. I have given vital information over the phone to a complete stranger and said do whatever tests are needed and bill me.
No, I didn't asked if there were any adults with them. (Actually I did, but I really meant, were there any moms or dads around. Something about being ages 19 to 21 somehow doesn't make you an adult when your child is at the emergency room.) Now I am waiting to know if they plan to spend the night at the home of the adult, who also happens to be the camp director and a dad, or go back to camp where all the other semi adults are sleeping. I wonder how many times in the past two hours I have thought, "Get dressed. It's time to go." I know there won't be much sleep tonight, but at least I'll have time to pray and thank God for His protection and comfort.
