Williamsburg: Commercial

We made the drive over to Williamsburg from Mathews on Friday. At first, we weren't as thrilled with Williamsburg as we thought we would be. We didn't buy the tour tickets, but just walked around the town. I'm sure the tours would have been great but since we go to Old Salem, NC every year we felt like it wasn't worth the fortune it would have cost our family. In the end we enjoyed walking around the village, seeing a reenactment and going to a tavern for supper. That was the highlight of the day. Though expensive, the food was great and it was a lot of fun. As part of the meal the tavern has entertainers who walk around from table to table and do magic tricks, sing songs and play games that would have been a part of everyday life in the 1700's. The entertainers and waiters were very knowledgeable and knew how to include everyone in the fun. There wasn't a huge crowd so the girls got a lot of attention.
Though we ate picnics everyday it was fun to go to a few restaurants during the week. We had a couple of super meals, and one we would never do again. By eating at home and carrying picnics our food budget for the week ended up not too much more than a normal week at home. Also, because we were eating our own cooking, we weren't all completely sick of restaurant food by the end of the week. I tried to keep lots of water and fruit in the car and plenty of candy too.

Dear Lori,

It is so funny that you were in Williamsburg this weekend. Alpheus and I are celebrating our 10th anniversary on the 10th and that is where we went for our honeymoon. I too was a little disappointed with Williamsburg but we didn't get a tour either. I went to Williamsburg in high school and the tours were great! I guess I didn't realize then that they weren't free and happening all year round.

I loved Jamestown though. We went to the fort/settlement and the Indian villiage, and also on the boats. It was a lot of fun. We talked about going back there for our 10th. I wish we had just so maybe we could have seen you guys! :) Instead we did what we could afford and my dear hubby took me to my hometown highschool's football game! (Okay, actually he took me to dinner and a movie too last week! And he bought me roses and a football holding bear, so don't think he didn't spoil me!)

My favorite place in DC would be a toss up between the Smithsonian and the Space and Air museum. I have never been in the White House or Capitol Building yet and I really want to. We are going to try to go to Williamsburg/Jamestown/DC the year we study Colonial History in school (next year or two).

Glad you had a good time. I know the girls will always remember these special times, too!

Blessings, Eva
