When people heard we were going to D.C., people kept warning us of the walking, the heat and the traffic. I was beginning to wonder if it was worth the trip. I had always wanted to go, but it never worked out. At the last minute someone loaned us their GPS (thanks Ole') so the traffic was a breeze as long as we obeyed the kind lady talking to us from our dash. The weather was absolutely gorgeous! In fact, the whole week we were gone the weather was perfect. The walking... now that was a different story. We never actually calculated it but we know that it was at least six miles. Mary literally walked holes in her shoes and I was sore for days afterwards. Ray was coming down with a cold, but ended up carrying Lydia half the day.
Was it worth the trip? Definitely! Would we do it again? Definitely! There is so much to see and do. We toured the capital building, the National Archives and the Holocaust Museum. The paintings, sculptures and architecture was what I loved seeing, but the Holocaust Museum was something that will not be quickly forgotten. It was designed to make you feel like you're in a concentration camp and after being in there for a few minutes you could almost smell the horrors. We saw the White House from the outside then ate supper at a local pizza place that was great.
This was a trip that we'll always remember where history came alive and government took on a new meaning even for those who aren't really interested in politics.
Then the night walk... D.C. is so pretty at night. We walked around some of the monuments, actually dragged ourselves around them. Once we go to the Lincoln Memorial and saw how beautiful the view was we were so glad we made the trek. The pictures don't do it justice.

So glad you enjoyed it! I had forgotten about the Holocaust Museum. I went there when I was a ps teacher. We took 80 6th graders! We had to go through fairly quickly and of course chaperone the kids. I would like to go back and see it more slowly. I remember we rode up to the top and walked down through.
It seemed more information and feelings than you can take in at one visit.
The pictures are wonderful!
Blessings, Eva
This was an amazing trip. The Holocaust Museum is definitely something to spend a lot of time in. There were a lot of school kids there but I think the chaperones seemed to be doing a good job moving the kids through politely and helping them get something out of the experience.
