It's no joke! Because Hannah is learning to drive, we took the opportunity recently to get her on some real roads in the country and the first time she crossed a bridge she encountered a herd of goats, crossing the road! Sarah rode along with us and got some great pictures of other things. Teaching your children to drive is oh so scary. I usually keep my right hand gripped tight on to the door handle. Though we made it through the process with Rachel, I don't know how I'll get through teaching three more.
Two weeks after Rachel got her license, we got the "every parent's nightmare" phone call. "Daddy, I've been in a wreck," with voice trembling Rachel reports. The car was totaled, but thank the Lord no physical injury. That was a year and a half ago and we can now say our family is the better for that "little mishap." All of our girls have a healthy fear of driving and are more teachable.
It was also very educational for Hannah to drive through our garage. Parents cannot automatically assume because your daughter has been riding in the car for fifteen years that she will know the difference between brake and gas pedals. With a newly renovated garage, we can laugh and learn from this mistake too. Another lesson learned that from a distance, a freezer spews freon and looks like a deployed airbag when it is driven through; and we didn't really need that freezer any way.
We'll keep driving and praying and hopefully my knuckles won't give away my fear too much. Check out more of Sarah's pictures here.
