This year in my Bible reading I have really enjoyed stepping through the Bible chronologically. In years past I have read in random places through the Bible using different programs. I am following a plan I found online here. I'm sure there are scholars who would dispute the placement of verses here and there, but it has been very helpful to me. Though the first few books of the Bible go pretty much in order, there's a lot of jumping around when you get to David's life and ministry.
I have enjoyed going back and forth to the Psalms as his life is traced from his ministry to Saul and fleeing for his life to his being king of God's chosen people. Today's focus was on the lists of genealogy of the chiefs and leaders of his army. I found it very interesting that the last portion of Scripture I read was Psalm 133. "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, coming down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard, coming down upon the edge of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon coming down upon the mountains of Zion; For there the LORD commanded the blessing--life forever." Even though these men weren't brothers in the sense we think of brothers, they were related by their common goal of service to their King David.
In the past, I have used these verses to teach kindness and unity among our girls. Now, I will think more of the context that they may have been written for leaders to work together for a mutual calling.
