Do You Hear What I Hear?

What is that you are listening to? When you get in your car, do you immediately turn on the radio or are you happy in silence? Years ago I read a book by Elisabeth George and she talked of her process of growth in what she listened to. When she became a Christian she started listening to Christian radio, which is good. Then she started listening to sermons and that was better. After a time, Mrs. George began to listen to the Bible on tape, which is always best.
Now -when we get into our car, there is seldom silence, but we try to be careful to guard what we hear. I don't have hard and fast rules that the girls only listen to Christian music and such, but we are quick to remind them to guard their hearts and minds. On the other hand, I don't want to hear junk all the time. The music you listen to has a way of hanging around in your brain. Try to think of the last song you heard, then try thinking of the last sermon you heard. Which is easier to recall? At this very moment Sarah is humming "Never Underestimate My Jesus" by Relient K and I can't think of any sermon much less the last sermon. Music is powerful and your time is valuable, use it wisely.
A couple of weeks ago I made the four and a half hour drive to my mom's house alone and I loved it. I caught up on Scripture "reading", listened to a couple of sermons and listened to Sense and Sensibility. One of my favorite items I have is the Bible on CD. I am able to listen to Max McLean read God's Word anytime. A lot of kids have ipods, computers, and DVD players, why not load those things with worthwhile stuff? When our children have grown up being exposed to sermons, classical music and listening to Scripture they are able to listen to it for periods of time. Sometimes they may even choose quality teaching own their own. It's nice to get into Rachel's car after her and hear violin music playing, though that doesn't happen everytime it is as often as not. Children have the capacity to surprise us by joining us in what we listen to and even enjoying our tastes every once in a while.

You're right! Our children will model after what they see us live out every day. Our children are mostly younger than yours, so we let them listen to "The Word and Song Bible". It is wonderful! They have learned so much from the bible reading and the songs. As they get older we will transition to the bible alone being read. We definately need to guard our hearts...and ears!!! :-)

Hi Jennifer,
When my big girls were young we listened to a lot of Steve Green and Judy Rogers. They both sing a lot of scripture verses. It's great to hear your little ones walking around the house singing, "There are six things, even seven, that God hates." Then they proceed to list those things that God hates. Judy Rogers sings a lot of the Proverbs.
