This was a response to a question about clothing and nursing babies in public places like church.
As far as nursing in dresses, I almost always wore buttons down the front.
The problem with buttons in the front and at the shoulder is that in public
you leave yourself completely exposed or hot under a blanket. I liked to
wear pull over type shirts that kept me covered and easy to recover if
someone came up on me unexpectedly. A light weight blanket has been a
constant companion of every one of my girls. (As young ladies they have
found that small blankets help them get in and out of the car modestly,
cover knees if they outgrew their dresses too quickly, etc...)
On nursing in church or public places - I don't have a problem at all with
it, but many people do, especially the elderly. I have nursed in church,
but seldom. It was usually in very large facilities that I could sit far
away from others. (My babies were loud too.) Ask the pastor's wife or a
few trusted older women in your congregation for their opinions. At malls
and playgrounds, etc. I just played it by ear, usually sitting under a
blanket.
Scripture mandates us to be modest, feminine and do things orderly. Often
times those issues are hard to gauge. We have to remember that not everyone
is where we are and have very different opinions. I try to see where I am
and what might be offesive to the people I'm around, though I'm sure I've
missed more sermons than I've wanted to but God knows what I need. Just
stay in the Bible. Nursing small babies is a great time to read.
